Prevent a Haunting Halloween

Halloween is a child’s favorite holiday full of creative costumes, scary movies, and delicious treats. While collecting candy is arguably the best part of celebrating ghosts and goblins on this particular night, it can also be an orthodontist’s worst nightmare.

For children who wear orthodontic appliances, it is necessary to take extra precautions on this holiday to ensure nothing frightening happens.

Foods to Avoid

Whether you are trick-or-treating or going to a Halloween party, here are foods to avoid to keep your night full of treats and no tricks:

Hard and Crunchy Food

When you have braces or wear an orthodontic appliance, it is best to avoid hard and crunchy foods altogether. Eating foods that have extra crunch or may be hard to bite down on increases your risk of an orthodontic emergency. Biting down on these foods may bend a wire, loosen a band, or break a bracket. Some crunchy foods include:
  • Chips.
  • Pretzels.
  • Granola.
  • Peanuts or tree nuts.
  • Popcorn.
  • Hard taco shells.
  • Raw vegetables.
  • Hard cookies.
  • Hard candies (Jolly Ranchers, Life Savers, Werthers, lollipops, jawbreakers, etc.).

Chewy Foods

Like hard and crunchy foods, chewy foods can also cause wire damage or loosen a bracket. Chewy foods require extra chomping, which can be very dangerous for people with braces. Although these foods may seem soft, you should still avoid them:
  • Jerky snacks.
  • Licorice.
  • Chewy candies (Starburst, Skittles, Swedish Fish, Sour Patch Kids, gummy bears, etc.).
  • Pizza crust.
  • Steak.

Sticky Foods

Sticky foods make cleaning your braces a horror. While sticky foods can also be harmful to braces, they are notorious for getting stuck in your teeth. Examples of sticky foods are:
  • Bubble gum.
  • Caramel.
  • Toffee.
  • Chocolate with caramel in it (Snickers, Twix, Milky Way, Rolo).
  • Peanut butter.
  • Fudge.

What Can You Eat

You may feel like wearing braces significantly limits what you can eat. Although there are some foods to avoid, there are also plenty you can still enjoy! Softer foods are always safer with braces and will feel the best on your teeth.

Here are some foods you can indulge in on Halloween and all year round:
  • Pudding, jello, or applesauce.
  • Pancakes or waffles.
  • Ice cream or popsicles.
  • Cupcakes and cakes.
  • Soft-baked cookies.
  • Soft chocolates (peanut butter cups, Hershey’s chocolate bars, Kit Kat bars, etc.).
  • Dessert drinks (smoothies, root beer floats, apple cider, hot chocolate, milkshakes, etc.).

Taking Care of Your Braces

Life with braces is only temporary, but the results can last a lifetime. The best way to achieve a smile you love is by taking special care of your dental health while undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Regardless of wearing orthodontic appliances, individuals should continuously monitor their sugar intake. An excess of sugar can lead to tooth decay and other dental complications. Limiting the amount of sugar you consume is effective, but there are other ways to maintain your dental health with braces.

Brush your teeth after every meal to ensure you remove any lingering food particles that may have gotten stuck in your braces. Pack a braces care kit with a toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, floss, and dental wax to carry with you at all times. This way, whether you are at a friend’s house, happy hour with coworkers, or trick-or-treating with friends, you have access to the necessary tools to practice oral hygiene habits.
