What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an increasingly popular alternative to traditional metal braces. The clear, removable aligners are virtually invisible, making them an excellent choice for adults and teens looking to straighten their teeth without drawing attention to their orthodontic treatment. They are custom-made for each patient and designed to shift your teeth into their correct positions gradually.

How Does Invisalign Work?

During your initial appointment, your orthodontist will take impressions of your teeth and use them to create a digital 3D model of your mouth. They will then use this model to develop a treatment plan, which will map out the position of your teeth at each stage of treatment.

After creating a model image of your teeth, your custom-made aligners will be made using clear, medical-grade plastic. You will need to wear each aligner for about two weeks before moving on to the next in the series. Your teeth will gradually shift into their correct positions as you progress through the treatment.

How Long Does the Process Take?

It usually takes around 2-3 weeks for your custom-made Invisalign aligners to be ready. Once they arrive, you will need to wear them for at least 20-22 hours each day to achieve the best results. You will also need to visit your orthodontist every 4-6 weeks for progress check-ups.

Most people start to see results within a few months, but the entire treatment usually takes around 9-18 months. After your treatment is complete, you will need to wear a retainer to keep your teeth in their new straight position.

Is Invisalign for Everyone?

While Invisalign has countless benefits, it may not be for everybody. The following issues may prevent people from being good candidates for Invisalign (always consult with your orthodontist to be sure.)
  • Severe Misalignment Issues - Invisalign may not be able to treat extreme cases, like an overbite. You may need traditional braces in this case.
  • Small or Short Teeth - The aligners might not fit well on these teeth and could cause discomfort.
  • Teeth Grinding - The aligners could break if under too much stress.
  • Previous Dental Work - If you have had prior dental work, like bonding or veneers, wearing Invisalign may not be recommended. This is because the aligners could damage these existing treatments.
  • Gum Disease - The aligners could irritate the gums and worsen the condition.

How Do I Know if Invisalign is Right for Me?

If you are considering Invisalign, it is essential to consult with an orthodontist to ensure that it is the proper treatment for you. Invisalign is an excellent option for many people, but there are some cases where traditional braces may be a better choice. An orthodontist will be able to assess your case and make a recommendation about the best course of treatment.

Invisalign is a good option for people who have mild to moderate misalignment of their teeth. It is also a good choice for people looking for a more discreet way to straighten their teeth. If you have more severe misalignment, you may need to consider traditional braces. However, even in cases of severe misalignment, Invisalign may be able to provide some level of correction.
